i lay puzzled as i backtrack to earlier times, nothing's equivalent to the new york state of mind...
we went to sik gaek in woodside for a big celebratory new year group dinner. it was rather amazing, again. larger groups are def the way to go here as you get the most bang for your won. we gave the phone stack a try (recommended), although there was a bit of a casualty when one unfortunate iphone on the top got knocked into a bowl of spicy rice cakes (not recommended).
nine of us split the insane monstrosity that is the large live seafood hot pot. they bring it to your table containing whole lobster, crab, mussels, shrimp, abalone, scallops, prawns, clams, baby octopus, calamari, and maybe something else i forgot in my soju haze. we opted against their house specialty this time, the wily live octopus.
all of these things are still moving in the pot when they bring it to you. it simmers for a bit while you eat your delicious galbi and kimchi pancakes and spicy rice cakes and spicy seafood noodles and table fried-egg and you drink your rice wine and your bottles upon bottles of soju and korean beer while trying to sort out your personal place-in-the-animal-kingdom/culinary ethics regarding the diving into a simmering stone cauldron teeming with still-live seafood that is shaking violently and surely cursing your grandchildren.
later, you can press the button prominently featured on your table after a while and the friendly waiters with surprisingly good memories will come right over with all types of industrial strength sheers and shiny meat-extraction implements to proficiently divide up the most insanely fresh and perfect-tasting lobster tails and claws and crab legs for everyone at your table.
enjoy hilarious k-pop. stay for hours. laugh a lot and drink more. toss large shells in a red plastic bin by your foot. grab a potent watermelon soju to split on the way out the door. reminisce about the shifty abalone that refused to stop moving for a really long time before you ate it. pay a mere $40 per person for tons of all of the aforementioned korean delights.
give thanks that this kind of incredible dining experience is possible in queens.
