my associate and i ventured to woodside for a lovely dinner at sripraphai last night. we went with a bottle of white, some tom yum, crispy catfish and green mango salad, trout with pepper and garlic, panang curry with chicken, and sticky rice and coconut rice. delicious, much better than my first visit there last year.

2 weeks agoConnecting Greenpoint and Long Island City across polluted Newtown Creek, the Pulaski Bridge is the site of a new public art installation. This afternoon, the Department of Transportation will officially unveil the work, a series of stenciled silhouettes and a lookout bench, built with reclaimed wood, by Joel Voisard.
The Queens-based artist painted the Pulaski’s pathway with the lower halves of walkers, cyclists and others who use the bridge, even a spray can-carrying vandal. If you don’t make the official opening for the “Bridge that Binds,” you can still see the outdoor exhibition, day or night, for however long it lasts.

pecas y más v2.0
about that cholado…
so, my original excitement about pecas y más being operational once again has waned after getting food from there twice and a cholado on a separate occasion following their odd sabbatical in the middle of the summer.
well, i learned, the original owners, an awesome 50-something husband and wife from cali, colombia, sold it to some new owners. so, while the name and some menu items remain, it’s not quite the same. the super cholado went up a dollar in price ($5 to $6), and down a few steps in quality and taste. first off, there was just way too much sweetened condensed milk. in fact, i called my dentist the very next day to schedule and appointment b/c my teeth still hurt 30 hours after consuming it. fruit was less diverse and in tiny little pieces of dubious freshness, and the mango sauce was either non-existant or of a different recipe.
despite the expanded food menu, my 2 forays in did not prove too tasty. one, in fact, was downright scary. i ordered the soup of the day, communicated to me as plantain. when i got home there was some plantains in there but there was also a WHOLE HEART OF SOMETHING. look, i understand the rich tradition of using every part of the animal. my ish with this is not some sort of disgust based on privileged western sensibilities or anything, my own cultures rock that shit hard. i would just appreciate some forewarning. valves and all. terrifying. and i’m not even a vegetarian. the empanadas sucked too, crunchy hard fried corn with mystery (non-valve-y, i think) meat inside.
sad, i hope previous owners made some bank of the sale and are doing well, they rocked and i miss them and their cholado virtuosity.
